Victor Veysey Fixes Bikes and Lives

victor_vesey.jpg
San Francisco Chronicle:

For the past five years, [Victor] Veysey has managed the Bike Hut at Pier 40. With his full-time staff of two and bushels of volunteers, he repairs and rents bikes. Perhaps more importantly, he trains young people from impoverished neighborhoods in bike mechanics and, by default, in the social graces.

The teeny Hut is tucked into the front corner of a parking lot driveway within shouting distance of Pac Bell Park. Old milk crates in front hold handlebars, fenders, seats. A rack nearby holds bikes of different styles and colors. The walls inside the cramped space - there is barely room for two people and a bike - bulge with tools. Bikes are stacked hugger-mugger out back.

Hurray for quiet heroes such as Victor Veysey!
