As much as I love the theater, it is rare to go to a production and say afterwards, "I'd not only like to see that again, I'd like to take my husband, as well as Carolyn & Randy, Fred & Terely, Frank & Barbara, my folks ..." If you love Cuban Jazz music, dancing and if you live in or anywhere within a two-hour driving radius of San Francisco, The Mambo Kings is a must see. You have only until June 19th and then the show heads to Broadway.

Heck, I loved The Mambo Kings, the musical almost as much as I Love Lucy. This Oscar Hijuelos & Arne Glimcher adaptation of Hijuelos' Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was so good I'd buy stock in this production which officially opens today, Tuesday, May 31st.

In so doing, I'd secure four seats at The Golden Gate Theater from now until June 19th, in order to make sure that every one of my friends who loves Cuban Jazz gets the pleasure of this sensual, intoxicating and very funny show.

The Mambo Kings the musical is an extraordinary lens into Latin love, lust, longing, laughter and living large.

The Mambo Kings musical production is directed by Arne Glimcher.

Glimcher also wrote the lyrics.

He also directed the 1992 film.

Both are a feast for the senses and one's soul.

The staging marks the first Broadway collaboration between the mother and son producing team of Daryl and Jordan Roth.

The music is by Argentinean born pianist and conductor Carlos Franzetti, who won the 2001 Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album with his CD, Carlos Franzetti: Tango Fatal.

Major kudos also go to Sergio Trujillo for his choreography, Riccardo Hernandez for his sets, Ann Roth for her costumes, Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer for their lighting, Constantine Kitsopoulos for his musical direction, as well as the talented cast:

For those like me, who think they have a recessive Latin gene in their body, that recessive gene will be showing its colors from the moment you take your seat until all of your Cuban Jazz loving friends will be made aware of this production.

The world premiere of the Broadway-bound stage musical stars Esai Morales (NYPD Blue's Lt. Tony Rodriguez, La Bamba), Latin American film, TV and recording star Jaime Camil, Latin Grammy-winning singer Albita, Six Feet Under's Justina Machado, David Alan Grier, Christiane Noll and Cote de Pablo.

Hijuelos' story is about two brothers in the 1950s and their journey from Havana Cuba to the nightclubs of New York.

Some of their dreams are taken from them. Some of their dreams come true.

On Saturday, May 28th one of the many great memories of this Memorial Day Weekend will be our adventure into 1950s Cuba and The Palladium and other Latin clubs in New York City.

The musical heads to The Broadway Theatre (1681 Broadway @ 53rd) in New York this July. Tickets are available for purchase now for an August 18th expected opening on Broadway.

Albita Rodriguez, known simply as "Albita", plays Evalina Montoya. The Havana-born, Miami-based singer-songwriter is a four-time Grammy nominee. In 2004 she won two Latin Grammys for Best Tropical Contemporary Album and for Producer of her album under her own record label. This year she was nominated for the Latin Billboards. Albita is a former protege of Emilio Estefan. In fact, Emilio and Gloria Estefan signed Albita to her first record deal under his Epic-distributed Crescent Moon label. In 1995, Albita released her first U.S. album, No Se Parece A Nada (Unlike Anything Else). Today, Gloria is no longer the only Cuban musical diva in Havana or Miami. At Bill and Hillary Clinton's second inaugural ball, Albita sang the Cuban classic "Guantanamera". Albita is so adored by Madonna that Madonna said, 'In my next life, I'm coming back as Albita'. At the 39th Annual Grammy Awards, "Dicen Que..." was nominated as best album of tropical music and got the Billboard award as Tropical Album of the Year. Newsweek magazine selected Albita as one of the "100 personalities for the XXI Century." "Her music - said The Los Angeles Times - is a complete package of vocal skills, poetry and extraordinary know-how of a group of young Cuban musicians." Her songs combine a Cuban country style called punto guajiro, nueva trova ballads, blistering salsa horn charts, Afro-Cuban chants, Buena Vista-style son (rhymes with "lone"), and American jazz.

As the sultry night club singer Evalina Montoya we get a taste of Albita's greatness. This taste leaves us only hungry for more.

Jaime Camil is one of the most well-known actors in Latin America.

He alone is worth the price of admission to The Mambo Kings.

He is also nearly as sexy as Antonio Banderas, who played the role of Nestor Castillo in the 1992 movie; at least as far as I could tell twenty-one rows away from the stage.

Upon learning about the film, only after seeing the theater production, I was inspired to see Banderas and Armand Assante's take as the mambo, rumba, cha-cha-cha Cuban Castillo brothers, so I rented it tonight.

Charismatic yes! Sensual and intoxicating, as promised.

But no where near as funny as Arne Glimcher's live theatrical production.

I especially loved Jaime Camil and Esai Morales' appearance as Desi Arnaz' cousins on the I Love Lucy show.

The Broadway-bound stage musical remake of the hit film and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Oscar Hijuelos is a "Rugged Elegance Select Performance" and must-see before June 19th -- unless you plan to be on the East Coast this summer or are lucky enough to live in New York!

Thanks to The Mambo Kings I intend to follow in my friend, Dave Shewmake's shoes and become a subscriber of San Francisco's Best of Broadway Golden Gate, Curran and Orpheum Theatre series.
