George Lucas has created a tearjerker of a movie.
His final Star Wars movie called "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" moved Lucas' friend Steven Spielberg to tears when he saw the film last week.
Spielberg, the creator of Jurassic Park, said:
I saw it about a week ago, and it's absolutely amazing.
It's the best of the last three episodes. It's the best way you could possibly imagine for George to finish it off, it has a tremendous ending and it's very dark.
You'll cry at the end, it's wonderful.
This weekend, Lucasfilm employees got a preview of the movie at the new state-of-the-art theater in San Francisco's Presidio campus where George has invested $350 million.
His employees are expected to move into their new digs sometime this summer.
Lucas' 1,500 person team was also likely to cry at the eagerly-awaited finale of the film because its moving conclusion marks the end of George's epic story.
However, it is just the beginning for Lucas' "post Star Wars" era, where the film company is morphing into a "widget driven" enterprise.
Lucas, 61, started his business in 1971 in Marin County, north of San Francisco, as a production vehicle for his movies.
Only Lucasfilm's new animation team will remain located at Skywalker Ranch, near George.
Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith opens May 19th.
The movie has received a PG-13 rating.
On September 23rd, those close to Star Wars may be in tears again if their favorite movie wins the American Film Institute (AFI) award for best score.
Star Wars has been selected by a jury as one of 250 nominated movie scores in the running for the "100 Years of Film Scores" celebration.
The one night only celebration will take place at the Hollywood Bowl at 8:00 p.m. on September 23rd, 2005.
Meanwhile, George Lucas is already the recipient of AFI's 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award.
The highest honor for a career in film was awarded to Meryl Streep in 2004, Robert De Niro in 2003, Tom Hanks in 2002, Barbra Streisand in 2001 and Harrison Ford in 2000.
Lucas, who is is the 33rd AFI Life Achievement Award recipient, will be awarded on June 9th in Los Angeles.
Lucas said:
I've been very fortunate to have had a long career doing what I love to do, and being recognized by AFI for it is really an honor.
I'm proud to be counted among such an extraordinary group of people whose lives are dedicated to the art of making movies.
The televised tribute to this inspirational filmmaker / entrepreneur will be broadcast on the USA Network, Monday, June 20th.
Thanks to Robert Eliot for inspiring this post.
