It took Canada's Charles Dionne 4:24:32 to win the fourth annual T-Mobile International Pro Cycling race in San Francisco, this morning. Dionne, a Webcor Cycling team member, took the lead in the final three miles, and then finished eight seconds ahead of Emeryville California's Fred Rodriguez, who struggled earlier in the race with equipment problems. As grueling as the Taylor and Fillmore Street hills were to Dionne, he has learned how to take command of them. Just two years ago, Dionne won the same 108.1-mile race which was known back then as the "San Francisco Grand Prix." Today, it is referred to as "America's Toughest Bike Race."

Sixteen seconds behind Dionne was U.S. Postal Service team cyclist, George Hincapie, from Greenville, South Carolina.

Six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong was in San Francisco this week, but he did not race.

Well before Sunday's race, Armstrong was seen dining at Quince with Robin Williams, a serious cyclist himself who has trained with Lance and who cheered him on this summer in L'Alpe d'Huez.

On Friday, the Lance Armstrong Foundation had a Dinner with the Pros at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club in North Beach. On Sunday, before the race, Armstrong spoke to a crowd of 500,000. Tendinitis in his right knee prevented him from joining the others for the 4th annual Pro Cycling Tour's season finale. He was "on hand", however, to sign autographs throughout the day. He was also there to cheer on his teammate Hincapie, as well as Jose Rubiera, who came in 14th and Viatcheslav Ekimov, who came in 18th, among all the other men and women cyclists.

The 108.1-mile 2004 race was led for much of the time by Coralville Iowa's Jason McCartney. However, the fourteenth climb up the Taylor Street hill got the best of the Piedmont-based Health Net squad member, and McCartney ended up finishing 12th.

The 108.1-mile men’s race, and the 51.6 mile women’s race started at 7 am along the Embarcadero near San Francisco’s famous Ferry Building. From the Start/Finish line, the course took the racers up Broadway and Columbus through the Italian district of North Beach. Halfway through the 8.8-mile circuit, The Marina flatlands along Bay and Chestnut gave way to the grueling climb up the Fillmore Street hill. At the top of Fillmore they hooked a left down Broadway, passed The Flood Mansion and onto Russian Hill's Polk Street, before returning again through North Beach and the Embarcadero, but not before making the Taylor Street climb.

For the second year in a row, Nicole Cooke, of Wales "cooked" on the women's 51.6-mile race. This morning, she won in 2:25:46. Previously, Cooke won the Women’s Giro d’Italia. She was also the 2003 World Cup Championship Series Winner.

Today, Tina Mayolo-Pic, of Dahlonega, Georgia finished two seconds behind Cooke.

Cooke's teammate, Modesta Vzesniauskaite, of Lithuania, finished third.

Three of the other women who competed in this year’s event were Dede Barry, 2004 silver medalist in the Olympic Time Trial in Athens, teammate Kristin Armstrong and Olympian Susan Palmer-Komar (Genesis Scuba FFCC) from Canada.

The purse for today's winners: $65,000 - a far cry from the $1 million Roger Federer won later in the day at the 2004 U.S. Open Tennis championship in New York.

Today in Northern California, T-MOBILE International, presented by BMC Software brought over 120 of the world’s best professional cyclists to the streets of San Francisco and over 500,000 fans, who traveled near and far, to cheer them on.

Among today's many sponsors were Zone Perfect and Francis Ford Coppola's Niebaum-Coppola. Among the fans were five cycling enthusiasts who pulled up at Peet's Coffee on Chestnut after following the "Federers and Hewitts of cycling" on their bikes.

Pacific Heights' Cory Sturtevant and Brisbane's Anthony Brown were two who spoke up. "Watching this level of athletic ability and team work is so inspiring," said Sturtevant. "They take these turns at speeds we would never take." Brown added, "These guys are real pros. In fact, I believe, at least one of them, Jason McCartney, qualified for the Olympics." All five of the guys, one who was wearing a yellow jersey, talked about the challenges of the race, the amazing bikes the racers were on and their awe of the men and women riding them.

The Pro Cycling Tour (PCT) is the nation’s only all professional road cycling races featuring world-class athletes, live television coverage and community festival events. The PCT is owned and managed by Threshold Sports LLC.
