In an effort to protect and promote the health of all San Francisco restaurant-goers, City Supervisor Tony Hall authored an ordinance, which passed this week in a 7-3 vote, that requires restaurants in the city to post a health inspection report. The approved legislation was inspired by a system used in Los Angeles that uses letter grades to rate restaurants based on cleanliness and public health standards. This was perceived as too harsh an ordinance. Instead San Francisco's Supervisors voted in favor of the merit-based approach, awarding a symbol to restaurants that meet certain standards. Those restaurants, cafes and places of business that serve prepared food must display both this symbol and their health inspection report in a place that customers can easily see them.
The city's Department of Public Health will also be required to post the reports on its Web site.
