Give Keith Luce plenty of credit. When he finally got the chance to open a place of his own, he came up with a gem. Luce named it Merenda, and it's an operation that blends three concepts into one: There's a cozy trattoria, a drop-dead takeout counter (the "rosticceria") and a way-cool wine bar, or enoteca. Whether customers want to eat dinner, hang out or just grab some takeout, Merenda's got them covered.
Certainly no one will find fault with Merenda's location. It's situated right in the middle of San Francisco's Cow Hollow neighborhood, which the locals claim is one of the last parts of the city that still feels like the San Francisco of old. Its laid-back vibe is just right for a place like this one.

"We got the idea while visiting France and seeing the lifestyle there," he recalls. "The name comes from a place in old town Nice called La Merenda," "merenda" being the term for "afternoon snack" in Italian. "Its owner is a world-renowned chef who left his high profile-restaurant to open an 18-seat place that was all his."
