Spanish flavors seem to have swept the Bay Area over the past few years, either in the way of tapas- inspired restaurants or incorporated into our already thriving "Mediterranean'' style of dining that defines the cuisine of Northern California.
Yet if you want to sample the flavors in their pure state, few places can compare to B44, where chef-owner Daniel Olivella cooks up rustic Catalan specialities. You can taste his passion and respect for his native cuisine, which is incorporated into every molecule of his appetizers and main courses.
Few places can compete with the paella. Each grain of rice is infused with flavor but retains its individual integrity, much like risotto but with a delectable crustiness on the bottom, where the rice sticks ever so slightly to the traditional black pan.
