San Francisco's Bouquets to Art Exhibit Shares The Stage This Year with Art Deco Exhibition

Bouquets.to.Art.2004.jpg

The 20th anniversary of Bouquets to Art opened today at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. This year, those who take the time to enjoy the floral tributes complementing the museum's works of art will be able to also enjoy the current Art Deco (1910 - 1939) exhibition from London's Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Bouquets to Art exhibit, held from Monday, March 15 - Friday, March 19, is sponsored by the San Francisco Auxiliary of the Fine Arts Museums. Renowned floral designers create arrangements which emulate a painting, a piece of furniture or a sculpture that is a permanent fixture at the Legion of Honor. In addition, three days of lectures and flower-arranging demonstrations take place by floral designers from around the world. Many of the luctures are already sold out, including the special Master Class in flower arranging on Friday, March 19.

Those who were lucky to get tickets to Jeff Leatham's lecture on Tuesday morning will have the opportunity to purchase his new book, "Flowers by Design,'' which is not yet unavailable in the United States. He will provide several hundred copies, signed and for sale, after the lecture. You can also pre-order the book by clicking on "buy products related to this story" below.

Bouquets to Art is one of the major annual fundraising events benefiting the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The week’s programs and the Art Deco exhibition in San Francisco are funded by the San Francisco Auxiliary of the Fine Arts Museums.  Proceeds support the museum's acquisitions, special projects, exhibitions, and educational programs.

All events will take place at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, California.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:30am to 5:00pm

Admission is $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors, and $5.00 for youth 12-17 years of age. There is a $7.00 exhibition surcharge for the Art Deco exhibit.

Museum admission is free on Friday, March 19 by courtesy of a generous grant from the Ford Motor Company.  However, I encourage you to go early in the week, when the flowers are still fresh. Every year, no matter how busy I am at work, I take a few hours off to take in this exhibit.

Some day, I look forward to seeing my mother's gift of flower arranging rub off on me and my girls. As a way of inspiring my six and eight year olds, I will be bringing them with me on Tuesday after school.

On Friday, the exhibition surcharge will still apply.

Members of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and guests who have bought tickets to Bouquets to Art events may view the galleries at no charge during regular museum hours.

By Public Transit: Take the MUNI bus #38 Geary, #2 Clement, OR #1 California to 34th Avenue.  Transfer to the #18 bus which stops in front of the Legion of Honor.
