Just when most people feel obligated to go on a diet, many top San Francisco restaurants are offering an irresistible culinary temptation. Through the end of the month, more than 120 restaurants will offer prix-fixe menus at $19.95 for lunch and $29.95 for dinner as part of Dine About Town, a promotion organized by the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau and now in its third year.
Participating restaurants range from established destinations like Greens to newcomers like Cortez. In some cases, the cost of the three-course meal is about the same as the usual price of the restaurant's entrees. At Harris' Restaurant, a 16-ounce prime rib costs $28 a la carte. Diners who pay a couple dollars more for the prix-fixe menu get a 10- or 11-ounce prime rib with a choice of salads to start, plus opera cake for dessert.
Dine About Town menus can vary throughout the month. A recent lunch menu at Farallon, for example, included white bean soup with herbed croutons, seared Hawaiian mahi mahi and apple cake with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. Dinner at the Financial District's new 500 Jackson restaurant may feature a choice of lobster sweet potato bisque or crispy calamari as appetizer, pan-roasted sea bass or grilled ahi tuna with truffle vinaigrette for a main course, and apple pie a la mode for dessert.
