Partygoers seeking a safe ride home from New Year's Eve revelry will be able to hop on public transit for free in at least three Bay Area counties.
The transit agencies in Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco counties will not be charging New Year's Eve night owls for bus, streetcar and light-rail rides.
Caltrain from San Francisco to San Jose also will throw in complimentary service after 11 p.m. "We're advocating safe travel during the holidays,'' said Brandi Hall, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.
The Bay Area Rapid Transit District has no end-of-year freebies, but it is offering a special deal to tonight's party-hoppers: a $5 flash pass for unlimited rides, available through certain Safeway stores and BART stations. Also, the rapid-transit agency will not commence its rolling closing of routes till 3 a.m. New Year's Day.
"The last train probably won't take off till 4:20 a.m.,'' said BART spokesman Mike Healy. "Normally we start our rolling close at midnight.''
