Union Square is lined by temples to shopping, with Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Macy's and Nike, to name a few. That's all well and good for the clothing-obsessed, but now food lovers have their own stop to make: Williams-Sonoma's new flagship store. Decked out with the classic white and gold tones of a designer clutch bag, the store's four levels and 19,000 square feet offer many products, including fresh and frozen foods, that are normally only available by mail order.
The location in the graceful 1923 Bullock & Jones building on the north end of the square, sandwiched between Tiffany & Co. and Levi Straus & Co., is the fulfillment of a decades-long dream by company founder Chuck Williams. Williams opened his first store in Sonoma in 1956, moving to San Francisco in 1958, first to Sutter Street, then to the most recent downtown location at the now-closed 150 Post, in 1988.
