Apple Computer Inc. plans to open its first company-owned retail store in San Francisco next spring, selling iMacs and iPods in a Union Square building now occupied by luxury cosmetics seller Sephora.
Apple said Tuesday it plans to expand the number of retail stores to 77 from 57 by May 2004, including its first international outlet in Tokyo.
Apple refused to comment except to confirm plans to open in Union Square in Spring 2004. But sources close to the deal said the Cupertino computer-maker signed a sublease agreement with Sephora in January and plans to turn 1 Stockton St. into one of its flagship stores.
This will be a fabulous addition to Union Square, especially for those of us who are Macintosh devotées.
