Matt Warshaw [is a] San Francisco-based surfing journalist/archivist/historian who has piled up more words on the sport and its unique culture than anyone dead or alive. [Warshaw is] just 43 years old.

To build "The Encyclopedia of Surfing," Warshaw first built a war room in a flat where he lives in the Sunset District. He put Mexican blankets over his guest-room window so as not to be tempted by the break at Ocean Beach. He burrowed in with every issue ever published of all the major surfing magazines, plus 500 surfing videos and access to a 750-volume library of books.
Warshaw thought it would take 18 months to write encyclopedia, but it took two more years plus two research assistants he knew from Ocean Beach. He blew through his $70,000 advance and went $50,000 beyond it on his credit card.
You have to admire Warshaw's entrepreneurial drive. The book is done and is now available via Amazon. Please check out the "related products" section below to order your copy.
