Whoever said nostalgia isn't what it used to be must not have seen San Francisco's restored Ferry Building, a landmark that comes very close to what it was in its Golden Age.

For the first 30-plus years of its life, the Ferry Building was very much the symbol of San Francisco and the Bay Area. San Francisco was the only real city on the West Coast and all roads to it led through the Ferry Building, which stood like a sentinel at the foot of Market Street, the widest and busiest main street in the West.

There were no bridges across the bay; all commuting to the East Bay and Marin was by ferry steamer. The boats connected with rapid transit electric trains in Oakland, Alameda and Sausalito, or to mainline passenger trains in Oakland for travelers headed for the rest of the United States.
