In the heart of Manhattan's garment district, Denise White slides on a pair of white latex gloves and starts opening the brown cardboard boxes that Federal Express has just dropped off at her company, Bernardo Fashions. The shipment -- from China -- is a week late.

A few blocks away, Cynthia Rowley, a fashion designer with a $22 million business, has been waiting since April 30 for 40 cartons of summer clothes, due from Asia, that will be sent on to waiting stores.

Taiwan Reports Record 34 New SARS Cases in One Day

Taiwan reported on Saturday a record one-day rise in SARS infections on the island, raising the number of cases by 34 to 308.Taiwan, the third worst affected area after mainland China and Hong Kong, said the death toll remained at 35.

WHO Says Hong Kong SARS Outbreak Under Control

The World Health Organisation said the SARS outbreak was under control in Hong Kong, the worst-hit area outside mainland China.

We think that the outbreak has come under control in Hong Kong and that soon there will be no new cases," WHO's head of communicable diseases, David Heymann, told Hong Kong Cable Television from Geneva in remarks broadcast on Saturday.
