Virus Proves Baffling, Turning Up in Only 40% of a Lab's Test Cases

From The New York Times: "The findings on severe acute respiratory syndrome by Canada's main virology laboratory have puzzled health officials."

Canadian researchers have found that the recently sequenced coronavirus is turning up in only 40% of the suspected SARS cases in Canada. Could it be that the coronavirus is not the sole cause of SARS?

Stay tuned.

A picture named flu.jpg Learning From History

We are frightened of SARS and rightfully so. I think that it is instructive to learn from history, so I highly recommend a book by Gina Kolata entitled, Flu: The Story Of The Great Influenza Pandemic. This highly readable book chronicles the largely forgotten 1918 flu pandemic which killed between 20 and 40 million people on a worldwide basis then mysteriously disappeared. It is important to remember that SARS is not caused by an influenza virus but, nonetheless, much can be learned by reading this book.

A picture named hong_kong.sars.jpg Scientists Scramble to Evaluate Drugs To Combat SARS

AP:Scientists are scrambling to evaluate existing drugs to find an effective treatment for SARS. To date the focus has been on anti-viral drugs. One exisiting anti-viral, ribavirin, has been used extensively in Hong Kong and Toronto but U.S. researchers have found it to be ineffective for the treatment of SARS. U.S. researchers have instead focused their attention on protease inhibitors, which have been effective in the control of the HIV virus.
