According to articles from The New York Times, Forbes and Billboard, here are some details of Apple's new music service which will be formally launched at 10am Pacific Time on Monday, April 28:

  • Built into iTunes, Apple's music library software
  • No subscription required, tracks sold at 99 cents per track
  • Able to burn tracks to a CD, transfer tracks to the iPod
  • Support for Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format, a successor to MP3
  • Content available from five major labels
  • Exclusive content available from high-profile acts whose repertoire has not previously been available for digital distribution
  • Mac-only to start, Windows version to follow
