Examples of Rugged Elegance

Here are some of our favorite people, places, products, prose and performances that inspire us to lead healthy, adventuresome, soulful lives.

People -- Lance Armstrong

In Lance Armstrong's book, "It's Not About The Bike: My Journey Back to Life," he traces his journey from being nearly struck down by cancer, only to recover and win the Tour de France. Armstrong is a thoroughgoing Texan jock, and the changes brought to his life by his illness are startling and powerful, but he's just not interested in wearing a hero suit. His actions will melt the most hard-bitten souls: a cancer foundation and benefit bike ride, his astonishing commitment to training that got him past countless hurdles, loyalty to the people and corporations that never gave up on him.

Places --National Geographic Magazine

National Geographic magazine has great photography and articles that challenge our world view, every month.

Products -- Segway Human Transporter by Segway

Talk about living a balanced lifestyle! Be the first on your block to own a Segway Human Transporter, the self-balancing, motorized, two-wheel transport which hits top speeds of 12.5 mph! Imagine yourself cruising down Lombard Street, the "crookedest street in the world," in your new Segway. Priced at $4,950, Amazon is now taking pre-orders for delivery starting March 1, 2003. A $495 deposit is required to reserve your Segway.

Prose -- Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy by Walter Willett

Written by Dr. Walter Willett, M.D., the chairman of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health and a professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School. As you might expect, this book is heavy on science but written in a hard-hitting, enjoyable style. A great book to read and use frequently as a reference on specific nutrition topics.

Performances -- The Terminator by James Cameron

Everyone associates Arnold Schwarzenegger with film. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in Alien, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking alpha female action stars.
