Examples of Rugged Elegance - November, 2002

Here are some of our favorite people, places, products, prose and performances that inspire us to lead healthy, adventuresome, soulful lives.

People --Teresa Marchese

Teresa Marchese, Rock Solid Fitness

If you are a woman living in San Francisco and want to get into great shape, look no further than Rock Solid Fitness.

Started in 1998 by Teresa Marchese, Rock Solid Fitness inspires and empowers women of all shapes, sizes, ages, and circumstances to strive for and maintain optimum physical fitness.

Places -- The Palmilla Resort, Cabo San Lucas

Before Cabo San Lucas was "discovered" there was The Palmilla Resort. One of the first resorts at the tip of the Baja, it is a place to rejuvenate your soul while getting back in shape. Their work-out facility looks out over the Sea of Cortez...very inspiring.

Products -- Shabby Chic of San Francisco. Malibu, Santa Monica, Newport Beach, New York, Chicago

Rachel Ashwell, the creator of Shabby Chic Home Furnishings has opened a new store on Fillmore Street in San Francisco. In the 1980s, she made the term "Shabby Chic" synonymous with her design sense and lifestyle based on the esthetics of beauty, comfort, and function.

Rugged Elegant Living's Tim Fredel and Jennifer King own two Shabby Chic couches, a chair, mirror, candlestick holders, glasses, and T-shirt bedding.

Prose -- The Omega Diet by Artemis P. Simopoulos, M.D., and Jo Robinson

The Omega Diet is based on the diet of the island of Crete (Greece), the home of Dr. Simopoulos -- who was a researcher at the National Institutes of Health. The focus of this book is the Mediterranean diet and its beneficial effects on the Omega-3 / Omega-6 fatty acid balance.

We highly recommend this book as it is chock full of great science written in a way that is very approachable for the lay person. Perhaps this book will inspire a movie sequel, "My Small Thin Greek Wedding!"

Performances -- G.I. Jane

O.K., it's a bit of a stretch but we loved Demi Moore in G.I.Jane What could be more inspiring for getting pumped up than watching Demi in a butch haircut become a Navy SEAL? Jesse Ventura must squirm when he sees this flick.
