"Glamour"ous, Rugged Elegant Women of the Year Honored at 16th Annual 2005 Conde-Nast WOTYs

Goldie.Hawn.WOTY.2005.jpg

On Wednesday, November 2nd, 2005, Glamour Magazine hosted their 16th Annual Women of the Year awards at Lincoln Center in New York City. The evening was all about inspiring and empowering women. Healthy, adventuresome, soulful, courageous women were honored. From Goldie Hawn to Catherine Zeta-Jones to a brave woman from Pakistan, each woman honored on Wednesday evening was indoctrinated into a rare sorority called The WOTYs.

This year, Glamour celebrated twelve WOTYs.

The best dressed, most "rugged elegant" men and women of the night included a pregnant Brooke Shields (Brooke and Chris Henchy's second child is due next spring), the "Killer Talented" Catherine Zeta-Jones, Catherine's and Hollywood's leading man Michael Douglas, "The Comeback" tennis star Venus Williams, "The News Source" CNN's international reporter Christiane Amanpour, the former leader of Ireland Mary Robinson, supermodel tsunami survivor Petra Nemcova, soul singer Mary J. Blige, teenage actress and one of the "Most Wanted" singers Hilary Duff, a "wrap" artist of a different kind, fashion "Style Powerhouse" designer Diane von Furstenberg, international movie star and "A Lotus Grows in the Mud" author Goldie Hawn, and co-host "Glamour Man" William Wackermann.

William.Wackermann.Glamour.jpgBill Wackermann, Glamour's Vice President and Publisher and Cynthia Leive, the magazine's Editor-in-Chief invited these women and other celebrities to their annual WOTY celebration.

Another woman who wins our best dressed, most "rugged elegant" of the night recognition is Mary Robinson, the former president of Ireland and the former United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights.

Today, Ms. Robinson is the Chair of the Global Council of Women Leaders, the Executive Director of the Ethical Globalization Initiative, and a founding member of the future International Museum of Women (IMOW).

IMOW is another significant venue which celebrates the lives of fabulous women. The physical museum is expected to open in San Francisco's historic Pier 26 sometime in 2008.

Woman Power, The 2005 Way

Mary Robinson won Glamour's 2005 "Leader" award.

Thelma Golden (40), the newly named director of New York City's Studio Museum in Harlem, won the magazine's "Fresh Eye" award.

Oscar-winning actress Goldie Hawn (60), won the "Laugh Legend" award.

Rocker and breast cancer-survivor Melissa Etheridge won "The Accidental Activist" award.

Petra Nemcova, who lost her long-time love to Thailand's tsunami last December, won the "Survivor" award.

Anne Sweeney (48), not only gets credit for winning the "Business Genius" award from Glamour, she has won a lot of women's hearts for having spearheaded the new hit television show starring Geena Davis called Commander in Chief. Sweeney is ABC television's powerhouse executive. As president of the network, she has also helped launch Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy and Lost, to name a few.

Glamour's December cover girl Catherine Zeta-Jones was honored by Conde-Nast for her "Killer Talent" as an actress, singer, dancer, T-Mobile cellular phone spokewoman, and global spokeswoman for cosmetics giant, Elizabeth Arden.

The Academy award-winning actress told Glamour, "I'm in awe of women who stand up for other women's rights."

Fellow 2003 Best Picture actress Queen Latifah presented Zeta-Jones with her 2005 "Woman of the Year" award.

A Woman Who Stands Up for Other Women's Rights

Big screen, television, and Broadway theater actress Brooke Shields presented a WOTY award to Mukhtaran Mai.

Mai is a thirty-three year-old Pakistani woman responsible for launching an international campaign against a group of men who gang raped her in her home country.

Mukhtara.Mai.2005.jpgThe magazine chose Mai for her courageous stand against the persecution of all women.

At the gala awards ceremony, Mai's introduction brought the biggest round of applause.

Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive told Mai in a letter:

For 15 years, Glamour magazine has saluted inspiring, high-achieving women with our annual Glamour Women of the Year Awards, and past winners include Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Diane Sawyer, Madeline Albright and many more.

Leive told the press:

Mai has struggled and struggled hard to highlight the cause of Pakistani women who routinely face abuse and rape in a male-dominated society.

She is being honoured for her incredible courage and optimism in the face of terrible violence.

"This award is a victory for poor women; it's a victory for all women," said Mai after the ceremony.

In conjunction with the gala, Glamour made a $20,000 donation to help Mai start a women's center in Pakistan located in Mai's remote tribal village of Meerwala.

Mai said her motto is "End oppression with education."

Mai, who is illiterate, plans to set up two schools with the money awarded to her.

The November 2005 Issue of "Glamour"

On this month's cover of Glamour is Natalie Portman.

Natalie.Portman.Nov.2005.jpg

One of America's most gutsy and gorgeous actresses invites you into her not-Hollywood world of superstardom.

On Tuesday, November 8th Conde Nast's special issue was expected to hit newsstands.

However in San Francisco, I was able to purchase both the November and December issues today.

A Special Year-End December 2005 Issue of "Glamour"

The twelve 2005 Women of the Year award recipients tell their stories in Glamour's special year-end December issue.

Look for the beautiful "Woman of the Year" Catherine Zeta-Jones on the cover.

Cindi Leive, in her "editor's note" writes:

Reading the paper in the morning, it's easy to get the impression that the world is run by former Glamour Women of the Year. For 16 years we've been celebrating female doers and darers in our December issue -- the power sorority is now 195 women strong -- and while the winners are always extraordinary when we honor them, they only get better with time.

This year alone, former WOTYs, as they're known, did everything from leadinga a space-shuttle mission (1999 winner Eileen Collins was the craft's first female commander and oversaw an unpredented in-space repair job(, to breaking age barriers (1994's Martina Navratilova became, at 48, the oldest woman to win a pro women's tournament since 1922).

As Brown University president Ruth J. Simmons -- the first African American woman to run an Ivy League school and naturally, a former WOTY ('96) -- put it in a speech this year: "You...teach by example even when you are unaware of the eyes that are watching you."

This year we were all watching the Women of the Year alumnae, and we were all inspired.

On Cindi's page, five previous WOTYs were highlighted:

University of Tennessee basketball coach Pat Summitt (WOTY '98);

Actress Jodie Foster (WOTY '91);

The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Julie Gerberding, M.D. (WOTY '03);

U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (WOTY '92); and

Sheryl Crow (WOTY '00).

Inspire & Be Inspired.

Here's to healthy, adventuresome, soulful, "celebrating women role models worldwide" living!
