Some people are said to "wear their heart on their sleeve." Now, thanks to a company called LifeGem, one can wear their dearly beloved on their ring finger. LifeGem is creating stunningly beautiful diamonds with soul from the ashes of cremated remains.
The LifeGem is a certified, high-quality diamond created from the carbon of one's loved one as a memorial to their unique life.
Ashes-to-Ashes & Dust-to-Diamonds
The company uses intensely hot ovens to turn ashes to graphite. They then press the stone into blue and yellow diamonds.
The cost to keep your gem of a mom close to you after she passes away?
$2,700 to $20,000 USD.
If mom or grandma requested having her ashes scattered out at sea, you can still fulfill that request and have her ashes turned into a dozen gems. If all her ashes were used, as many as twenty diamonds could be created.
Dean VandenBiesen, vice president of operations for LifeGem, said:
So far, nobody's ordered more than 11 diamonds.
It's not for everyone.
We have people that approach us who have just experienced a tragedy and they say I can't wait, I'm so excited about this.
In the field of death care, when someone says I'm really excited about this, I think we've achieved what we wanted to do which is change the culture of death.
VandenBiesen added that for those who do choose to immortalize their loved ones in jewelry, the experience is extremely positive.
Mark Musgrove, immediate past president of the National Funeral Directors Association, said, "The success of LifeGem is just one example of a radical shift in the funeral industry."
Upon the death of a loved one, more and more Americans are investing time and money celebrating that person's life rather than mourning their loss via a traditional funeral.
One of the alternative means of remembering a loved one who has died is to immortalize them in the form of a diamond.
Personalization
Personalization is a huge opportunity in the 11 billion dollar U.S. funeral home industry.
If you considered your mom your best friend, than you might say that the statement, "diamonds are a girl's best friend" now has the opportunity to take on a whole new meaning in life, and after life.
