Janet Jones & Wayne Gretzky's "Royal 1988 Wedding"
Now Paulina is following in her mother's footsteps.
No, not down the aisle quite yet. And thank goodness for that. Afterall, she is only sixteen.
In front of the camera or on a stage, however, she is a natural beauty -- just like her mom.
The singer-turned-actress-turned-model, Paulina Gretzky will appear in Flare magazine's August 2005 issue.
She is considered by some to be the "spitting image" of her mother.
Her father was always a "center" -- so, it is no wonder his daughter is now taking center stage.
Last year, the blond beauty performed the national anthem at a semifinal game during the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
Over a 20 year period, Paulina's father played on four different NHL teams: the Edmonton Oilers, the Los Angeles Kings, the St. Louis Blues, and the New York Rangers.
(Boston Bruins' Bobby Orr -- another Canadian -- was my hockey hero growing up. Then, along came Gretzky.)
In 2003, Paulina made her singing debut at the Oilers/Canadiens game at the Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium.
Her audience? A record NHL attendance of 57,167 fans.
At the game, Paulina sang Sarah McLachlan's hit "I Will Remember You" for which she received a standing ovation.
Incidentally, Flare's biggest-selling cover of 2004 was exactly a year ago.
The August issue featured Canadian popstar-mom Sarah McLachlan.
Other recent Flare covers include Canadian model Daria Werbowy, model and actress Molly Sims and Gwen Stefani, and country singer Shania Twain.
At that same Oilers/Canadiens game, her father took to the ice one last time to help celebrate the Edmonton Oilers' 25th anniversary as an NHL team.
On another stage, Paulina recently finished shooting a small part in Nick Cassavetes' upcoming Alpha Dog movie which stars Justin Timberlake and Bruce Willis.
On May 24th, she and her family were in Toronto for the Flare photo shoot.
The magazine asks "why Paulina"? To which they respond "Because she's talented, beautiful and poised to become the next big triple threat."
Her dad Wayne said in a statement, "Paulina has a real passion for singing, acting as well as modeling, so Janet and I have always encouraged her to work hard and follow her dreams."
Paulina said, "I was a little nervous but was very excited to begin modeling."
Paulina's family flew from Los Angeles to Toronto for the photo shoot.
Inside the August 2005 issue of Flare Paulina appears in a unique family portrait with her famous parents, as well as her four year-old, younger brother Tristan.
Behind The Scenes
Max Abadian, a long time Flare contributor, was the photographer in charge of Paulina's cover shoot, as well as the exclusive photos taken of her family.
Hung Vanngo was Paulina's makeup artist.
Liz Cabral, Flare's fashion director selected a Chloe jacket and pair of DSquared pants for the cover.
Paulina and Janet are the first mother and daughter to both be featured on the cover of Flare.
In 1998, Janet and Paulina's father appeared together in the world famous Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition.
The "tri-talented" aspiring model, actress and singer was born ten years prior on December 19, 1988.
Paulina told Flare:
I want to be a triple threat.
I want to get into everything: singing, acting, modeling. I love it all.
A year after SI captured the couple in this photograph to the right, Rick Reilly, my favorite sport's writer (certainly the funniest on the planet), wrote a piece about Paulina's dad called "No Fuss Necessary in Wayne's World". This piece gives those who were not lucky enough to live in the era of Gretzky's time on the ice a small taste of what it must have been like to be raised in Wayne's world.
Janet Jones Gretzky's 1987 Aerobics Video
No, that is not Paulina above. That is her mom nearly twenty years ago.
A year before Paulina's birth, her mom came out with an aerobics instruction video called The Firm.
Flare's editor-in-chief Lisa Tant came to the studio to review photos with Paulina, Janet, Max and Liz. At the photo shoot TV camera crews from CTV and Fashion Television were also present.
Our magazine has always celebrated fresh new talent, and Paulina certainly has that 'it' factor.
It's unusual for Flare to put an inexperienced model on our cover, but when we find someone with beauty and talent, we grab them!
Flare is a Canadian fashion and beauty magazine with a reach of more than 1.7 million women every month. For twenty-five years, the magazine has been an industry standard. Launched in 1979, today Flare is produced by Rogers Publishing.
