What could be more romantic? Imagine being swept away to Paris, perhaps the world's most romantic city, then offering a proposal of marriage at the Eiffel Tower. That is exactly what the Risky Business, Top Gun movie star Tom Cruise did early Friday.

Think Tom and Katie Cruise.

Over the past few months there has been speculation that Tom and Katie were not "the real-deal".

That speculation is fizzling fast with the announcement that Tom has expressed his genuine love for Katie Holmes by asking her to marry him.

Katie's answer?

"Yes!"

When asked why he chose the famous Paris landmark, Cruise said:

I've never actually been to the Eiffel Tower and I just, it's Paris, you know. It's beautiful, a beautiful city. It's very romantic. I'm excited to be here.

Tom presented Katie with a stunning diamond ring.

When asked about a wedding date, Cruise said, "We haven't discussed that -- one step at a time."

The 42-year-old actor, who turns 43 next month, focused his attention on the present.

He said:

Yes I proposed to Kate because it is very beautiful and romantic here.

Today is a magnificent day for me; I'm engaged to a magnificent woman.

After accepting his proposal of marriage, the 26-year-old actress joined her new fiance in Marseilles. Cruise had a promotional event in the South of France.

Cruise was also in Paris to promote next month's French release of Steven Spielberg's film "War of The Worlds" based on the H.G. Wells novel.

Earlier this week, Holmes was in London to publicize her new movie, "Batman Begins" based on the graphic novel Batman: Year One by Frank Miller.

"Batman Begins" opened this week in Paris and most other parts of the world, including the U.S. The movie will be available at IMAX Theaters in Canada and America.

Katie plays the role of Rachel Dawes in the upcoming superhero movie. She works in the DA's office and is Bruce Wayne's good friend growing up.

When Holmes marries Cruise her world will include participation in the Church of Scientology -- Cruise's religion. Cruise says Kate "digs" the Church. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cruise said Kate is curious about Scientology, founded by L. Ron Hubbard.

The former star of television's "Dawson's Creek" has said she grew up wanting to marry Cruise. Kate was engaged to actor Chris Klein (whose credits include the American Pie movies) but broke off the relationship in March after dating him for five years.

Cruise's last relationship, with actress Penelope Cruz, ended last year.

He has been married and divorced twice - first to actress Mimi Rogers and then to actress Nicole Kidman. Kidman and Cruise adopted two children.

Hopefully the third time for Cruise is a charm.

Katie always dreamed of marrying Tom Cruise as a kid. She said she grew up with a poster of the movie star on her bedroom wall and always wanted to marry him. Now, her dream is coming true!
