Miss Thailand
Twenty-three year-old Chanaporn Rosjan won the Miss Universe 2005 national costume parade competition. Miss Thailand's award was presented in gala ceremonies held at Impact Arena, Exhibition and Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand on May 25th, 2005. The entire competition was broadcast Monday night on NBC.
Our favorite -- from the few we could see and before learning which won this competition -- was Miss Thailand's costume.
Designed by fabric expert Theerapan Chanchareon, Miss Rosjan's costume was inspired from the apparel of court ladies during the Ayutthaya period (1350-1767).
The Thai traditional outfit, woven from golden silk, took nearly one year to make. The fabric was weaved using a traditional, time-consuming method.
The accessories, including a bracelet and belts, are made of real gold.
The tiara is a replica from a period piece which is on display in a museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The total cost was almost one million baht ($41,200).
Miss Thailand's costume was the most "rugged elegant" and the most sophisticated of all.
Miss Rosjan is the third Miss Thailand to win this prize. In the 1969 and 1988 Miss Universe competition, Saengduan Manwong and Pornthip Nakhirankanok won the costume competition.
This year's Miss Czech Republic Katerina Smejkalova finished as first runner-up while Mexico's Laura Elizondo finished as second runner-up.
Miss Turks and Caicos and Miss Philippines took the fourth and fifth place respectively.
This year's Miss Universe Pageant brought together 82 beautiful women from 82 countries to compete for the most coveted beauty title in the world.
This year's Miss Canada, Natalie Glebova won the entire competition.
