Today's Rugged Elegant Living photo of the day was shot on Wednesday night near the city of Puebla, Mexico. AP Photographer Joel Merino captured the Popocatepetl volcano sending out a plume of smoke at dusk on March 30, 2005.
The towering volcano Popocatepetl, a Mexican icon, has inspired awe and worship since before the time of Cortes.
Puebla Mexico is located 80 miles southeast of Mexico City.
Established by the Spanish in 1531 on the main route between the port of Veracruz (the most important port in Mexico) and Mexico City, Puebla was the principal city of colonial Mexico.
Puebla's appearance is the most European of all the colonial cities, because it was planned from the ground up by a Spanish city designer rather than being built within an existing Indian community.
Popocatepetl is one of four volcanoes in the region.
It is not the highest in altitude but it is active.
As seen above, it periodically spouts steam and ash.
The great, often angry 17,883-foot volcano is located at the eastern end of the Valley of Mexico.
The other volcanoes in this region include: Iztaccihuatl (17,338 ft.), La Malinche (14,632 ft.), and Citlaltepetl (18,855 ft.), also known as the Pico de Orizaba.
Thank you Joel Merino.

Here's to healthy, adventuresome, soulful, "capturing the mountain spouting off and the sun setting" living!
