A High Sierra Shocker After American Idol IV Shows Off Their Girl Power with 90s Hits

jessica_sierra.jpgAmerican Idol showed off their girl power again on Tuesday night showcasing 90's hits.

Carrie Underwood, Vonzell Solomon and Nadia Turner stood out among the Top Ten finalists who performed their hearts out on March 29th 2005.

Sadly, the fourth and final woman in the competition, Jessica Sierra was not considered as strong as the rest.

America voted, as host Ryan Seacrest said, and Jessica, the nineteen year-old from Tampa Florida is going home.

Do you remember last season?

Fantasia Barrino, LaToya London, Diana DeGarmo and Jasmine Trias represented the Girl Power in the competition.

This year, America has welcomed Carrie Underwood, Nadia Turner, Vonzell Solomon and, until Wednesday, Jessica Sierra into their homes every week.

The top four women of American Idol IV offer a little bit Country, a little bit Rock 'n' Roll, a little bit R&B and a little bit Jazzy Pop. Together, they have had a good portion of the music industry covered. The one thing all four have had in common: heart and soul.

Last year, we experienced shockers, as well.

LaToya London was one of our favorites throughout the third season. We expected her to land in the Top Two.

But America didn't see it that way.

AI4.Bottom.Three.3.30.05.jpgWe were not entirely shocked that Jessica was in the Bottom Three this week.

Frankly, we were far more shocked that Anwar Robinson landed there, as well as Nadia Turner who was in the Bottom Three two weeks-in-a-row.

The judges were equally surprised.

All three of them, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, agreed that we were saying goodbye to some of the strongest vocalists in the competition.

Cowell said he would have replaced Nadia with Scott Savol. Ouch.

When Ryan announced that Nadia was safe, he asked Randy whom he would save between Anwar and Jessica.

His response was once again right on the mark.

Randy Jackson said:

I would save them both.

I think it was one of those weird weeks when you've got two of the best singers down in the bottom.

When Seacrest asked Jackson what he thought happened, Randy responded:

This is a singing contestant. This is not about looks. It's not about personality performance; it's about singing.

And these are two of the better ones.

This is kind of weird for me.

I wouldn't put either of these two in the Bottom Three.

Ryan then asked Paula if she was surprised -- to which she said:

I'm very surprised.

I think, as Jackson said, two of the top vocalists are right up there on that stage with you.

Seacrest asked Abdul if the contestants should be judged for their night's performance or for all of their performances as a whole.

Jackson encouraged people to judge on each night.

Abdul encouraged fans to keep calling for the contestants that they like.

With that, Ryan delivered the "High Sierra Shocker."

He said, "Jessica, you are going home tonight."

Jessica said that she had not prepared to be in the Bottom Three.

Certainly then, she did not expect to be packing her backs and heading east tomorrow.

Sierra received the lowest number of votes out of a record 32.5 million, the most ever in a non-finals night.

Now, if she could just translate the hundreds of thousands who did vote for her into buyers of her first CD, it wouldn't be all that bad.

Even if she got 4% of the total votes on Tuesday night, she would have ended up with just over 1 million votes.

With one million record sales she'd be on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a star.

In the eyes of many, she already is!

Back to percentages, if you think about the fact that the show started with over 100,000 contestants, Jessica Sierra landed in the top 99.99 percentile. Not bad.

A Few of The Top Nine Who Have At Least Nine Lives

Last night, Carrie Underwood tied our contest for Best Vocal Performance along with Vonzell Solomon.

Country is clearly Carrie's best genre.

Martina McBride, Carrie's favorite female artist, (George Michael is her favorite male star) would have been proud. And not just because Carrie chose McBride's song Independence Day to show us the breadth and depth of her vocal abilities.

Simon Cowell described what Carrie's got as the "it" factor.

Randy Jackson couldn't have judged it better. He said:

Great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great.

That was the best performance of the night.

The best performance until we heard Vonzell Solomon sing I Have Nothing perhaps as well as Whitney Houston.

Paula Abdul said after Vonzell's performance, "I gotta tell you, Vonzell, America's falling in love with you. You gave one of the top-notch performances tonight."

Vonzell also gets our highest marks for Most Soul and Most Beautiful during Tuesday night's performances.

Vonzell.wave.jpg The Vonzell Wave

Her waved hair was stunning against her gorgeous smile. The voice behind her smile must have made not only her daddy proud, but also all her hometown fans in Fort Myers Florida.

Nadia Turner

Nadia Turner won our Most Rugged Elegant Attire, Best Dressed competition and rocker performance last night.

Nadia and Anwar, I want to go shopping with you.

FOX and new owner CKX, if you want to make even more money from your show, set up an e-commerce site on idolonfox.com where fans can purchase the outfits the contestants wear each week. I bet a lot of women would have bought the hat Bo put on Paula's head last night -- the actual one and the reproduction.

Rugged Elegance would be your first affiliate to set up contextual links to the contestants and the judges' clothing, jewelry, accessories and make-up.

In fact, Paula could put her name behind the jewelry she wears, and have a big hit on her hands.

But I digress...

Nadia belted out Melissa Etheridge's "I'm The Only One."

The judges loved her performance but questioned whether or not her choice of songs would get her the top number of votes. No worries. The Top Three slots are irrelevant on American Idol. All that matters is not getting the least number of votes.

We were shocked that Nadia ended up in the Bottom Three again this week. But fortunately, she is safe and returns next week.

Judge, Simon Cowell told Nadia:

A thousand percent improvement over the horror we saw last week.

We still can't believe she was voted into the Bottom Three this week, again.

Constantine.3.29.05.jpg
Constantine Maroulis

Constantine Maroulis

Of the male stand-outs, Constantine and Nikko topped this American family's list of favorites last night.

In the initial American Idol IV auditions in St. Louis, Carrie Underwood sang Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me, the same song Constantine sang on Tuesday night.

Two renditions: One male, one female.

Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul called Constantine's rendition of I Can't Make You Love Me one of his best vocal performances of the final competition.

In fact, Paula called it Maroulis' best of all.

Constantine.Sirius.jpg

Last night, Constantine delivered a different type of serious.

My nine year-old daughter, who is probably the biggest Harry Potter fan on the planet said:

Mommy, if J.K. Rowling plans to bring back Sirius Black into Harry Potter VI or VII at a younger age, Constantine should be a shoe-in to play the role...if he could just get a British accent going.
Constantine.HP.Sirius.jpg Constantine, A Young Sirius Black?

One thing is for sure: Constantine Maroulis sure does know how to work the camera better than any other contestant.

Work it Constantine, work it!

You've got our votes.

Quoting Jessica Sierra when asked what her definition of American Idol is:

...an American Idol is someone who is blessed with the opportunity to share with the world the beauty of music in their own unique way.

They are also a role model to those who have their own hopes and dreams of becoming an American Idol, whether it is singing or any number of other various talents.

We're now down to single digits.

Will this year's American Idol be Bo Bice, Anthony Fedorov, Constantine Maroulis, Anwar Robinson, Scott Savol, Nikko Smith, Vonzell Solomon, Nadia Turner or Carrie Underwood?

Two more months and we'll know.

Inspire & Be Inspired.

Here's to healthy, adventuresome, soulful "keepin' your dreams alive no matter what" living!

~ Jennifer Carolyn King, Rugged Elegance, LLC

P.S. The related CD links above are in honor of the artist's work Jessica chose to sing on Tuesday, as well as to honor her favorite female artist, Christina Aguilera and her favorite male pop artist, Elton John.

P.P.S. This was Jessica Sierra's second attempt to become a star.

In 2004, Jessica appeared on CBS's Star Search.
