"Soul" Star-in-the-Making Joss Stone Replaces Sarah Jessica Parker "Sex" Star as Gap Spokesperson

The soulful British teenage sensation, Joss Stone -- who has brought the world Super Duper Love aka Diggin' On You -- has agreed to become a spokesperson for San Francisco-based clothier Gap.

She will replace HBO's Sex and the City star, Sarah Jessica Parker.

Other celebrities featured in past Gap campaigns include Jada Pinkett Smith, Jessica Alba, Lenny Kravitz, Michael Vartan and Peter Krause.

Parker, who turns 40 on Friday, signed on last spring for a three-season campaign. She appeared in Gap ads from Fall 2004 through Spring 2005.

For her efforts it is reported that she received over $38 million.

Parker has most recently appeared in commercials promoting the company's "Pretty Khaki" line. The company's message: "Enjoy being a girl in khaki styles with feminine a flair."

Earlier this month, Parker signed a two-year deal with HBO to develop and produce series and long-form programming. She also recently announced the upcoming release of her signature fragrance. The fragrance is due to launch this fall.

Joss will serve as Gap's summer advertising campaign face and voice.

Both she and her music will be featured in Gap's new advertising.

Gap is banking on Stone being able to help them sell their white denim line.

The Devon-born soul singer, who turns eighteen on April 11th, earned three Grammy Award nominations and won two Brit awards.

One Grammy nomination was for best new artist of the year.

At the age of sixteen, she was already being compared to Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin.

Both her Soul Sessions and Mind, Body & Soul CDs were two of the fifty best-selling albums in the world last year.

The Soul Sessions was released on September 16th, 2003. Mind, Body, & Soul was released on September 28th, 2004.

At the 2005 Grammys, Stone performed live on stage with Melissa Etheridge.

Now, the Gap has good looks, a spunky personality, and a talented voice working for them.

Gap management said in a statement:

Throughout Gap's history, we've had the pleasure to partner with many well-known celebrities, musicians and rising stars. Sarah Jessica Parker, however, was the first celebrity with which we have enjoyed a multi-season partnership. In mid-2004 we signed a three season contract with Sarah Jessica, and from Fall 2004 to Spring 2005 she has connected with women of all ages to help them understand the versatility of our products and our spirit of individual style.

For Summer 2005 we will rely on models to communicate our product story of white denim. Our television commercial will feature the music of Joss Stone -- she will also appear in the commercial. We're very excited to be partnering with such a dynamic, up-and-coming talent.

While Gap will always seek partnerships with celebrities, musicians and rising stars, we don't have any future plans to sign a single person to a multi-season deal like the unique and special relationship we enjoyed with Sarah Jessica.

Yesterday, marking an important first for the company, Gap Inc. was honored by the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE) during its annual 30 Best Companies for Executive Women awards in New York.

"Gap Inc. is proud to be recognized as a company that supports the development and advancement of women," said Eva Sage-Gavin, Executive Vice President Human Resources.

This includes up-and-coming female artists.

One of them was born with the name "Joscelyn Eve Stoker."

Joscelyn has her mother, Wendy, to thank for suggesting "Joss Stone" as a catchier, more sultry public persona name.

On April 8th, Joss will appear in a special episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Joss will perform "Spoiled" for Oprah and her audience. "Spoiled" has been called by Rolling Stone a "rolling Seventies-style pout about the downside of good luck."

If anyone from the Rugged Elegance community is in England this August, consider getting tickets to the V Festival, August 20th - 21st. Joss and the Kaiser Chiefs will be among the artists performing at Richard Branson's annual U.K. music fest.

Meanwhile, one of our other favorite British artists, Jamie Cullum, is back in the studio working on the follow-up to 2004's Twentysomething.

Cullum is set to work with the Neptunes and Dan The Automator.

Congratulations even more to the Gap.

As long as Stone can keep her mouth as clean as the look of your summer line, you'll have a great "hit" on your hands.

As a mother of two daughters who regularly shops at the Gap for her kids, Stone will easily fill the image gap Parker may have left.

In fact, the gap is likely to be "solid as a rock."
