Best Dressed, Most Rugged Elegant Men & Couples At The 47th Annual Grammy Awards

05.Grammys.Martin.BDM.jpg

On Sunday, February 13th 2005, on Heineken's "Green Carpet" the world's top musical stars came out, many of whom were dressed to the nines.

Here is Rugged Elegant Living's selections for the "Best Dressed Men & Couples" at the 2005 Grammys.

Not only did these gentlemen and pairs have "the rugged elegant, most handsome" look, they embody the healthy, adventuresome, soulful spirit Rugged Elegance looks to celebrate, every day.

Ricky Martin came to the 2005 Grammys to present the award for the Best R&B Album.

He looked casual wearing a white shirt, a brown leather jacket and his trademark stubble.

During the "Red Carpet" show, he captured the spirit of what had brought everyone together that night.

Martin, who will begin touring again upon the release of his new album in July, said:

This is great. Once again, it's about celebrating music. It's talented people coming together, after spending many, many months in the studio, and being able to receive the "Hey, Hey You Did It. You Did A Good Job! [from their peers].

Bono

U2's Bono was certainly on top of his game at the 2005 Grammys.

We loved the rose colored shades.

Somebody ought to revive the commercial "I wanna be like Mike!" but this time make it "I wanna be like Bono!" Have you seen U2's video that takes the band on a flat bed truck trek through New York?

I wonder how many other people said to themselves, "I wish I could have been Bono or any one of the U2 band-members filming that day."

Congratulations to U2 for winning "Best Rock Performance for a Duor or Group with Vocals" with "Vertigo", one of the best recorded songs of all-time.

On Sunday, all four band members came to the stage to accept their award.

The Edge, the band's lead guitarist, stepped up to the microphone first to dedicate the Grammy to his daughter, Sian. He did not tell the audience, but his seven year-old daughter has reportedly been suffering from leukemia for a number of years and is now being treated in at the Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin.

Bono, genuinely surprised by the Grammy, gave kudos to his fellow nominees and the producers of this year's Grammy celebration.

He said, "I think this is the best Grammys I've ever seen."

Bono had a bit of a time getting anyone else from his band to speak up. Handing the award to Larry, he said, "Larry Mullen Jr."

Mullen used the opportunity to apologize to fellow fans for the Internet ticket presale snafu.

05.Grammys.John.Legend.jpg John Legend

John Legend, the opening act for Alicia Keys, opened the 47th Annual Grammy celebration.

Legend wore all black: a black open shirt and tux jacket along with a goatee.

Before the celebration, he told Star on E Live from The Red Carpet, that some day he would love to work with fellow songwriter, Fiona Apple.

Fiona recorded her version of McCartney and Lennon's Across the Universe, the song sung by a bevy of nominated stars at the 2005 Grammys. Having heard her rendition, I can understand why Legend has the desire to team with Apple.

Perhaps Legend was at the Key Club in West Hollywood last Saturday night at the Grammy all-star jam where Apple showed up and gave everyone a taste of why she is the multi-platinum success we have known her to be.

Perhaps Legend can help bring Fiona out of hiding.

Kanye West

On the night of the Grammys, Kanye West, who was up for ten awards, wore a white suit, a white shirt and a white tie. His attire was a stunning contrast to his beautiful dark skin and the swirling design on the left side of his head. His hair looked an intricate henna design but shaved instead of stained.

During the "Red Carpet" show, Star asked him, "When will it be enough?"

West responded:

It will never be enough. You can never be satisfied. You can just be happy about what you've got and what God has given you. But you've got to keep on working and hopin' that you will be back next year.

West won three Grammys on Sunday and a whole lot of fans with his amazing performance of Jesus Walks.

Marc Anthony

Marc Anthony and his new wife, Jennifer Lopez offered a steamy performance of Anthony's Escapemonos.

Before the live telecast, Anthony was awarded a Grammy for "Best Latin Pop Album of the Year."

His award-winning album: Amar Sin Mentiras.

05.Grammys.TimMcGraw.jpg Tim McGraw

Tim McGraw wore a brown leather jacket, and black cowboy hat per usual. He looked gorgeous, as he always does.

During the celebration, McGraw sang his Grammy-winning song "Live Like You Were Dying."

Other Best Dressed Men or Groups

Some of our other favorite "best dressed" men included:

Bryan Michael Fox

Judakiss & His Entourage

While Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and his family weren't exactly dressed to the nines it didn't matter. He had the best answer when his son was asked, "What are you wearing?" After Tyler's son Taj responded "I dunno," Tyler chimed in "a smile, a smile, that's all he needs."

A moment later he was also quick on his feet to respond to the question, "How much do you make?" Tyler didn't miss a beat. He said, "About 21 -- after taxes." (Thank you for contributing to keeping the Federal deficit down.)

05.Grammys.Hoobastank.jpgDoug Robb, singer / songwriter for the rock group Hoobastank, had a great Sgt. Pepper-esque coat, going on at The Grammys.

Robb is half-Japanese.

Mario, one of the night's presenters, looked stunning in a black velvet tux.

On the "Red Carpet," he said he would love to some day do a duet with Beyonce.

John Mayer, 2005 Grammy Award-winning came to the ceremony already a winner. The author of "Daughters" and award winner for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance, wore a stunning black velvet jacket.

His album, Heavier Things, which includes his award-winning song, "Daughters" was released in the fall of 2003. In Amazon's "music store" it is ranked #15 in top selling albums. It is a must-have.

Another way to enjoy Mayer's song, and a number of the other 2005 Grammy nominees is via the twenty-song CDCD called 2005 Grammy Nominees. The album, which was released on February 1st 2005, includes Mayer's song "Daughters" along with an award-nominated song by The Black Eyed Peas, Ray Charles with Norah Jones, Green Day, Los Lonely Boys, Alicia Keys, Usher, Kanye West, Maroon 5, Joss Stone, Gretchen Wilson, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Josh Groban, Prince, Seal, Evanescence, Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello & The Imposters and U2.

Of course, Jamie Foxx looks great wherever he goes and whatever he wears.

Keith Urban, nominee for Male Country Vocal Performance, wore a white shirt, a brown leather jacket and a gorgeous smile. His look reminded us of his song, "You'll Think of Me."

Quincy Jones also looked fabulous, especially as the conductor of the orchestra who performed with Foxx and Alicia Keys on stage.

As AskMen.com said:

Quincy Jones has always been recognized as one the best dressed men in entertainment. When you write the foreword (like he did) for a book called Men of Color: Fashion, History, Fundamentals, you know your rep is solidified as a cat that can dress.

Another gentleman who both looked and sounded great was Stevie Wonder. He helped carry the special fund-raising musical performance of John Lennon and Paul McCartney's song "Across The Universe." The song was sung by more than a dozen musicians.

iTunes has made a download of the track available for 99 cents, all of which will go to UNICEF. Those looking to download the song can do so via iTunes.com.

In collaboration with the 47th annual GRAMMY Awards and CBS, The iTunes Music Store is donating to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF 100% of the proceeds from the sale of downloads of the live performance.

The money raised will go to the Tsunami Water and Sanitation fund, a joint project of the Clinton Foundation and UNICEF, created to strengthen UNICEF's efforts to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases in tsunami-ravaged areas.

P.S. You could become a "best dressed" celebrity too.

Esquire Magazine is launching a nationwide search for "The Best-Dressed Real Man in America," with the five finalists to appear on the "Today" show, co-hosted by Katie Couric.

Beginning March 15, Esquire will sift through contestants in 10 U.S. cities.

A panel of editors and "local celebrities" will judge who is a cut above the rest.

"In every city in America there are men who express their ambition and their personality in the way they dress every morning," Esquire Editor-in-Chief David Granger said in a statement Wednesday. "Right now, men in the U.S. are showing more originality in personal style than ever before," he said.

The five finalists will appear on the NBC morning show in September.

Viewers will be able to vote for their choice through Esquire's Web site.

The contest will be held in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles.

Esquire has in the past rated the best-dressed male celebrities. Last year, Andre 3000 of OutKast was chosen for his "soulfully preppy" look.
