Historical Macedonia, where Alexander the Great set out to conquer the ancient world in the 4th century B.C., is today contained mostly in present-day Greece. Formerly part of Yugoslavia, it is a treasure-trove of Greek, Roman, Slav and Turkish history.
Macedonia's capital, Skopje is an important tourist center in the Balkans. In addition to the charming old town and the Kale fortress on the hill, Skopje attracts guests for its rare cultural and historical monuments.
