President Bush is Re-Elected: November 4, 2004 Newspaper Headlines Around The World Provide Global Perspective

Bush.Cheney.Laura.jpg
Rugged Elegance Inspiration Network - 2004 Election Special

Congratulations President Bush, Vice President Cheney, the American citizens, Republicans, Democrats and Independents who voted for GWB II, and everyone around the world who believes America chose well.

We have learned that 119 million U.S. registered voters came to the polls to select their leader for the next four years. It was the highest turn-out in 36 years.

After Tuesday's election, we learned that Bush's 59 million votes were the most in history.

We learned that the GOP will pick up 4 seats, now controlling the Senate 55-44-1.

We learned that the House of Representatives now has a majority of Republicans in Congress.

What is our nation and the world saying about President Bush being re-elected?

Around the world, how is the media spinning Bush's victory? And Kerry's defeat?

Rugged Elegance has gathered 38 newspapers from America to Down Under to Yemen that made U.S. Politics and Bush's victory their front page headlines on Thursday, November 4, 2004.

Another 28 countries whose newspapers chose to highlight America's presidency on their front page are also mentioned.

Through this fascinating exercise, we learned that on the front page of The East African in Kenya there was no mention of Bush or Kerry. However, Barack Obama was the highlight.

Congratulations to the new U.S. Senator from Illinois!

In capturing both an electoral majority and the popular vote, Mr. Bush lays claim to another four years in the White House with a newly minted mandate to deal with a troubling war abroad and unfinished work at home.

So how will he govern?

His biggest task will be reaching across party line in a nation divided and rewarding Republicans who were motivated by value and who put him back in office.

Russia

Moscow Times - Papers Say Russia Is Better Off With Bush

Most Russian newspapers declared Russia better off with a re-elected U.S. President George W. Bush and turned to horseradish, idiots and President Vladimir Putin's frienship with Bush to argue the points.

"It's in the Hat" read the headline next to a picture of Bush adjusting a cowboy hat in the popular daily Moskovsky Komsomolets.

"Bush's victory is beneficial for Russia," Alexander Livshits, Putin's former economic advisor, wrote in a commentary next to the article. "We know him, we know members of his team. We are used to them and they are used to us.

"Furthermore, George Bush's administration does not tell us how to live. It does not interfere much with our country's domestic affairs. And the personal relationship that our two presidents have established is also important."

Moskovsky Komsomolets did take the opportunity to offer a comment on U.S. domestic affairs. "The 2004 elections showed that a party that comes out in favor of abortions and supports the demands of gays for legal marriages and demands of the scientific community to allow stem-cell research on human embryos cannot currently govern the United States," it editorialized.

Russia's papers Vremia Novostiey and Trud also covered the U.S. election results.

Saudia Arabia

Arab News - Bush Wins as Kerry Concedes - W2: But Who Is He?

With President George W. Bush re-elected for a second term, the Middle East and the Muslim world beyond would do well to take a second look at the man who would lead the American "superpower" for four more years.

Who is George W. Bush? Is he a bumbling, low IQ rich kid, playing dummy for sinister ventriloquists? Or is he the populist demagogue in blue shirtsleeves out to sell the gullible Americans a bill of good?

If he is any of those things one must wonder how he has succeeded in persuading more than 50 million Americans to vote for him for a second time.

Is it not possible that he may be a traditional conviction politician of the kind that became endangered species after the cultural revolutions of the 1960s?...

Unlike European, and some American politicians, who deal in shades of gray, Bush sees the world in black and white terms. When Bush says: You are either with us or against us, he really means it. He perceives of good and evil as physical realities, and not metaphysical abstractions, affecting the lives of both individuals and nations. French President Chirac likes to call Bush "a cowboy" while Japanese Premier Koizumi describes him as "Gary Cooper at High Noon".

According to an old Arab saying a man is best known through his enemies rather than his friends. The logic of this is that a bad man might choose good friends. Well, here are some of Bush's enemies: Mulla Omar, Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and, oh yes, the speculator George Soros.

Some world leaders have tried to understand George W. Bush based on what they know of his father's tenure as president. The older Bush, however, was a classical style balance of power player raised on a fare of Cold War politics. To him the highest call of politics was to defend and perpetuate the status quo. The younger Bush, on the other hand, is a change-maker, as evidence in his domestic and foreign policies.
