World's Greatest Golfer, Vijay Singh is The PGA's $10 Million Man: Chrysler Victory is His 9th of 2004

singh.chrysler.trophy.jpg

Fijian-born Vijay Singh became golf's first $10 million man on Sunday when he won his ninth 2004 PGA Tour victory of the year at the Chrysler Championship. The Chrysler is played on the par-71 Copperhead Course at the Westin Innisbrook Resport in Palm Harbor, Florida.

How much has Vijay earned this year?

$10,725,166 to be exact.

Second on the money list to Singh is Phil Mickelson who has earned half as much.

During the final full-field event of the PGA Tour, Singh birdied the first two holes and closed with a 6-under 65 to win by five shots. The win earned him $900,000.

It was his largest margin of victory since he won by six shots in the 2002 Houston Open.

The forty-one year-old's win today matches Tiger Woods for the most victories in a season on the PGA Tour since 1950.

"Vijay is the hottest player in the world," says Tournament Director Gerald Goodman. "He's been a good friend of this tournament over the years and we're glad to have him back."

Vijay_Gerald_Trophy.jpgIn a year that gets better with each week, Singh birdied the first two holes at Innisbrook and never let anyone get within two shots the rest of the way.

Singh closed with a 6-under 65 to win by five shots.

"The wins keeps coming, and I'm enjoying every bit of it," Singh said.

He finished in style, hitting out of a fairway bunker to 15 feet and making that for birdie.

Singh also set a new tournament scoring record by one shot. The previous record was held by K.J. Choi in 2002. Today, Singh finished at 18-under with a final score of 266.

Singh goes to the Tour Championship with a shot at a 10-10 season. "10-10" would equal 10 victories and $10 million.

Woods won nine times in 2000. No one else has won that many times since Sam Snead had 11 victories in 1950.

"It's hard to swallow it right now," Singh said. "It's incredible."

Singh once earned minimum wage and $10 a lesson as a club pro at Keningau Club in Borneo.

Today's win gives Singh a chance to join Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan and Sam Snead as the only players with at least 10 victories in one season.

That chance will come next week at the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake (November 2-7).
