Last night, the Boston Red Sox experienced four firsts in both baseball history and sports history:
1) Their ALCS win last night earned Boston the first pennant since 1986.
2) Their seven game Division win represented the Red Sox' first post-season series victory over the Yankees, ever.
3) This is the first time in Major League Baseball post-season history any team has come back from a 3-0 deficit to win the series. (In the NHL, two-out-of-140 opportunities has this happen, and never in the NBA.)
4) Last night's win represents the biggest comeback in sport history!
Did you know that the Red Sox won the first World Series ever?
Johnny Damon Celebrates with ALCS Trophy
While the league was founded in 1887, the first Series didn't take place until 1903.
The BoSox, also known as the Puritans, Piligrams and Americans, actually won five out of the first fifteen World Series.
Until 1918, no team won more times than The Boston Red Sox.
You could even say they were "The Yankees" of early baseball.
The Red Sox did not appear again in the World Series until 1946, when they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
Their next appearance was in 1967 when they again lost to the Cardinals in seven games.
The Red Sox appeared in the classic 1975 World Series when they lost in seven games to the Cincinnati Reds.
The last time they appeared in 1986, they lost to the New York Mets, in... you guessed it, seven games.
Given their history, we can likely expect a seven game series.
Will it be against the Cardinals to whom the Red Sox two seven-game series?
Or will it be the Houston Astros, who have never appeared in the World Series?
The Houston match up would make it especially interesting given the fact that Roger Clemens is a former Red Sox.
More interestingly, the Houston vs. Boston World Series would echo the upcoming presidential election of Bush (Houston) vs. Kerry (Boston).
