America's cup yacht Alinghi, left, of Switzerland, crosses paths of the Emirates yacht of New Zealand, center, and BMW Oracle, of the United States
In 2007, all eyes will be on Valencia Spain for the next America's Cup yachting races. Valencia is one of Spain's largest cities located about halfway down the East side of Spain's Mediterranean Coast. This week, those who follow the sport, are paying attention to the pre-regattas taking place on the same waters which will determine seeding for the 32nd America's Cup. Yesterday, Team New Zealand won the second pre-regatta with 11.5 points.
While the eight teams waited in vain for the wind to pick up, by 3:30 the races were cancelled. All received a 1/2 a point as dictated under the Rules.
Italy's Luna Rossa took second place with 10.5 points.
San Francisco-based BMW ORACLE Racing was third in the match-race competition.
Luna Rossa, which lost to Team New Zealand in the 2000 America's Cup, was the only top team to beat the Kiwis in this regatta.
In March 2003, Team Alinghi from Switzerland won five consecutive races to sweep the America's Cup from New Zealand, bringing the oldest trophy in international sport to Europe.
