It took 264 weeks, but, yesterday, Vijay Singh took over as the top-ranked golfer in the world after he beat Woods at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton Massachusetts.
Tiger Woods has held the No. 1 ranking since August 8, 1999, a record 264 consecutive weeks. Singh, 41, who was born in Fiji with roots that extend to India, said "I never thought I would be sitting here, the best player in the world right now."
Vijay has become only the 12th man to own the world number one ranking since its 1986 debut. He became the first golfer from outside the United States to own the top spot since South African Ernie Els in June 1998.
Singh shot a 69 to beat Woods and defending champion Adam Scott by three strokes. Singh birdied three of the last four holes. He earned $900,000 for his victory.
Congratulations Vijay!
Here's to healthy, adventuresome, soulful and determined living!
