Golf Magazine's September 2004 Issue
Thanks to growing interest in the sport of golf, the Ryder Cup, known as "the Super Bowl of golf" according to Golf Magazine publisher, Chris Wightman, Golf will release their biggest issue since the magazine's inception in 1959. The October issue will hit newstands on Tuesday, September 14th, the same day the 2004 35th Ryder Cup ceremony begins and three days before the first match begins.
This year's schedule is as follows:
Ryder Cup Matches
Friday, September 17, 2004
USA Network - 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, September 18, 2004
NBC - 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Sunday, September 19, 2004
NBC - 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Golf's October issue is treating the tournament as such, with an extensive Ryder Cup preview including stats, lore, opinions, a description of "match-play" tactics (different than typical golf tournament scoring), plus a guide to the tournament course at Oakland Hill Country Club in Michigan.
The event has become more and more popular over the years, perhaps even more so given the course of recent world events.
"The match play format of the tournament allows for an intriguing competitive environment fueled with patriotism," says Wightman.
New advertisers, Tommy Bahama, Hewitt (presenting sponsor of the magazine's 45th Anniversary event), Pravda Vodka, Baume & Mercier watches, Lufthansa, and the new GlaxoSmithKline brand, Commit (a nicotine lozenge designed to dissolve in the mouth and deliver enough nicotine to ease a smoker's cravings), are helping support the 40% increase in pages over October 2003.
At $14.97 a year (a $33.03 savings), Golf ranks as Amazon.com's 130th most popular magazine.
