Pat Tillman
There is sad news today from Afghanistan. Pat Tillman, 27, who gave up a multi-million dollar contract to play safety with the Arizona Cardinals to serve his country, was killed Thursday in Afghanistan in the line of duty.
Tillman enlisted in the Army in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. When the decision was announced on May 23, 2002, his then coach, Dave McGinnis, said, "This is very serious with Pat. It's very personal, and I honor that. I honor the integrity of that. It was not a snap decision he woke up and made yesterday. This has been an ongoing process, and he feels very strongly about it."
It is tempting to glorify Pat Tillman for giving up something that many of would love to do, playing in the NFL, in order to serve our country. I'm sure that Pat Tillman, if he were still alive today, would say that his fellow soldiers sacrificed as much, if not more than he did.
With that in mind, we honor the life and the sacrifice of Pat Tillman. We also honor the lives and the sacrifices of his fellow soldiers.
And we pray for their families.
