Fox Sports:
Michelle Wie thought she had made the cut after the second round at the Sony Open in Hawaii today.
And though she quickly found out that she had fallen one shot shy, it was still a remarkable performance by a 14-year-old girl against many of the world's best players on the US PGA Tour — and one that will send shock- waves around the conservative world of golf. "I think I can play out here one day," said Wie, who displayed a sublime short game, taking just 23 putts on her way to a two-under-par 68 at Waialae Country Club.
She is the first woman to shoot a sub-par round on the US Tour.
But if you think she was happy with that, think again: "One more shot and I would have made it. It's killing me," she lamented after posting an even-par 140 total.
"I thought I had made it, because everyone was congratulating me. I asked (an official) what is the cut and he said 139. I added 70 plus 70 together and it equalled 140. I was like, no, this is not happening."
On a day when Australian Steve Allan shot 62 to take the lead on 11-under 129, Wie tied for 80th, beating 48 men including highly-rated Queenslander Adam Scott. And she recorded the same total as Stuart Appleby, last week's Mercedes Championship winner.
Wie is a high school freshman from Honolulu, Hawaii, who accepted a sponsor's exemption to play in the tournament. She is believed to be the youngest person ever to play in a Professional Golf Association tour event.
Wie is continually breaking new ground. In 2000, at the age of 10, she became the youngest player to qualify in the USGA amateur tournaments at the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. In 2002, she set the LPGA record for youngest player to qualify for an LPGA tournament, when she shot an 83 to qualify for the LPGA Takefuji Classic. Wie made her first appearance in an LPGA major -- the 2003 Kraft Nabisco Championship -- at the age of 13.
Even before yesterday's amazing round, this six-foot tall ninth grader has been one of the most talked-about golfers on the circuit since Tiger Woods. In fact, some now refer to her as the "Tigress of Golf."
We hear she's interested in going to Stanford University. Perhaps, the Tigress will indeed follow in Tiger's foot steps.
Wie's ultimate goal after college: To "play at the Masters."
Needless to say, "Wie are Inspired."
Look for Michelle Wie:
