A Port Primer

SF GATE
The origins of the trade in this sweet fortified wine date back to the 17th century, when wars with France deprived the British and Dutch of French wines and they were forced to find a new supply. The Portuguese were more than willing to oblige.
My Port Primer:
* Choose Tawny Ports, they last longer -- up to one month after opened (they are already oxidied during production, and come in a caramel color) Seppelt (AUS), Whisker's Blake (AUS), and assorted others aged 10-40 years (POR).
* If you can finish a bottle in a night for a party, etc, go with the Vintage Port (almost any maker from Portugal in a good year). Or a late bottle vintage (LBV) can be similar in quality to the vintage offering, but as a rule, uses grapes that are not as good as the vintage port from the same winery. But don't try to age an LBV.
