Governor Linda Lingle and the Friends of Hawai'i Charities announced Thursday that a special sponsor's exemption has been granted to allow Hawai'i's own golfing prodigy Michelle Wie to participate in the 2004 Sony Open in Hawai`i PGA golf tournament in January.
Sony Corporation, title sponsor of the Sony Open in Hawai'i, granted the special sponsor's exemption at the request of Governor Lingle and Friends of Hawai'i Charities.
"Sony has had a remarkable 35-year relationship with Hawai'i and its people, and allowing Michelle Wie a sponsor's exemption is a small way to show our appreciation to the people of the state for their many years of support of Sony and this tremendous charity event," said Mitsuru Ohki, corporate executive vice president, Sony Corporation.
Governor Lingle made a personal request to Sony because she believed residents were interested in seeing Wie play in one of the most prestigious PGA tournaments in her home state.
"We want to thank Sony for granting our request and for recognizing the contributions Michelle Wie has made to the game of golf," said Governor Lingle. "The Sony Open in Hawai'i continues to attract the sport's top players, and this exemption is certainly a major acknowledgement of the caliber of Michelle's game. Sony has always been supportive of the people of Hawai`i and we greatly appreciate this ongoing partnership."
