Waterfalls Put Action Into The Landscape

San Francisco Chronicle:
When Patrice Donna steps into her backyard and it's quiet, something's amiss. She's used to the sounds of falling water, day in and day out. "It's very noticeable - in a good way," she explains. "It's like living by the ocean - you get used to all that. We love it."
She and her husband, Frank, have a waterfall in their backyard. They hired landscape contractor Harry North to build it for them nine years ago when they bought a new home in Penngrove. They'd had a waterfall at their old home in Novato, and missed it. Anyway, their new lot was perfectly suited. "We live on a rock hill," she explains. The falls come off a high slope, with upper and lower ponds and cascading waters. The couple can enjoy the full effect when they're out on the patio or by the pool, but even indoors, in certain parts of the house, they can hear it. They've also had smaller water features built out front.
Some day, there will be a waterfall in our backyard. Perhaps the same time we put in a jacuzzi. By that time, I have every intention of hiring a landscape designer, who is currently in school at UC Berkeley, to manage the construction. Her name is Sarah Ahles. Keep that name in your back pocket, if you live in the Bay Area.
If you have a home in Northern California, the San Francisco Chronicle has compiled a helpful list of landscape and construction resources. Click on the link above for names, phone numbers and web addresses.
