Through a Glass, Darkly: Riedel Pioneers Opaque Tasting Glass

riedel.opaque.jpg

Wine Spectator Online

For wine drinkers wishing to stay completely in the dark about the wines they are tasting, Riedel Crystal has made it possible. The Austria-based stemware company has introduced the Blind Blind Tasting Glass, a jet-black, opaque glass that masks a wine's color.

Riedel bringing new meaning to the idea of "blind tasting." A novel idea.

Riedel (pronounced Reed-ul) talks about the shape of the glass distributing a specific type of wine to the appropriate place on the tongue -- Chardonnay glasses are shaped differently than Cabernet glasses, for example.

There is more than likely something behind this concept, however, I find that upgrading to cut glass makes an even more definite improvement. Next time you have a glass of wine in a restaurant (if it's not Riedel glass), notice how big, clumsy and round the lip of the glass is... and how the wine kind of dribbles in your mouth without purpose.

Spiegelau is an excellent alternative to Riedel if you can't keep from breaking his fragile masterpieces.
